General Recommendations
on Course Selection
Freshman Registration
Checklist:
General Recommendations
on Course Selection
1. You should register for 15-19 credits.
2. The number of credits required for a Newcomb-Tulane degree is 120,
(may be more for individual schools) so to complete that requirement
in four years you must take an average of 15 credits each semester.
3. As you select courses keep in mind that you will not be permitted
to drop a course during the semester if that will result in a course
load of fewer than 12 credits.
4. Be sure that you know your Foreign Language Placement. You may
register for only the level in which you have been assigned. If you
have a question about the placement, call the Language
Learning Center
at 504.865.5879. If you have not submitted your placement information
online, do so now. You must have placement for any language you take,
even if you have never studied it before.
5. In addition to courses that fulfill proficiency requirements and
explore a major, you may want to select courses that satisfy core curriculum
requirements, which are best explained in The General Curriculum 2008-2009
brochure. Usually freshmen begin with introductory courses (100 and
200 level).
6. To review Fall courses online: From Academic Advising homepage,
advising.tulane.edu, select “Registrar,” then select “Schedule
of Classes.” Then select 2008 “Fall Schedule” and
click on the appropriate school.
7. For course descriptions: From Fall Schedule page click on the highlighted
course and number (for example ECON 101) and you will be able to see
the course description.
8. If you are undecided you may want to choose the school of Liberal
Arts whose curriculum will fulfill the beginning
course requirements for any other school. We also
recommend that you contact your
Summer Academic Advisor.
9. You may find the “My Planner” feature on the Schedule
of Classes website extremely helpful in the selection and scheduling
of your courses. When you see a course that you are interested in taking,
simply click on the green circle with the plus sign to the left of
the course name and section. It will add each course that you are thinking
of taking to a calendar grid so that you are able to easily construct
a schedule without any time conflicts.
10. Tulane offers many course choices every semester. Although you
may not get your first choice in course selection you will get a full
schedule of course that will count towards your degree. Therefore,
courses that you may not be able to take during the first semester
will most likely be available during the Spring semester. Case in point,
only half of the freshman class will be able to take English 101 during
the Fall semester and the remaining will take it Spring semester.

o Click the "Register" button again. TOUR will report your

3. Review Curriculum and Course Information
There are several resources you may use to determine
which classes you need, which you prefer, and which are available
in the fall:
•
The Newcomb Tulane Core Curriculum outlines
the common requirements for all entering freshmen. You may download
and view a PDF version of the Core Curriculum any time.
•
There are Curriculum Guidelines specifically covering
English, Math, and foreign language course selection.
•
Descriptions of English 101 course offerings can
be found at http://www.tulane.edu/~english/Courses/courses.htm.
•
When determining what language course to take, remember
that your placement in foreign language courses will be determined
on the basis of the information that you provide us on the language
placement web site. Please fill out this online questionnaire starting
June 18th.
•
Use the online Schedule
of Classes to view all courses
offered in the fall 2008 semester and determine which are: open, closed,
restricted to honors students, have prerequisites, have other restrictions.
You can construct a schedule and check for time conflicts using the
My Planner feature.
4. Complete the Foreign Language Placement Information
You will need to go to Language Learning Center
website http://languageplacement.tulane.edu and
complete the New Student Language Placement questionnaire. The questionnaire will be available June,
2008.
The Foreign Language Placement is required for all
freshmen. Even if you have not taken ANY foreign language classes in
high school, you must state so on the form. Foreign Language proficiency
requirement is required for all students in order to obtain a Tulane
degree.
Pertinent information for 2008 incoming students
can be found at:http://www.tulane.edu/~llc/Fall%202006%20or%20later.html
5. Consult with Summer Academic Advisor about Course
Choices.
The name of your summer academic advisor is included
on your PIN notice. If you uncertain about whom
to contact, call (504) 865-5798 or e-mail the Academic Advising
Center and you will be directed
to your summer academic advisor. Contact your summer
academic advisor with questions about the general curriculum, requirements
for specific
schools or majors, or any other academic question
you may have.
6. Choose Courses (and alternates)
Your fall 2008 registration will depend on
the AP or IB credits you anticipate bringing in.
As a first year student you need to be focusing
on completing the Newcomb-Tulane Core Curriculum
requirements.
In addition to the core curriculum, each school
and college such as Liberal Arts, Science and
Engineering, Architecture, the Business School and Public Health
all have
separate requirements.
Finally, there are also requirements specific
to each major as detailed in the university catalog.
A normal semester course load consists of 15-18
credit hours. Honors students should be enrolled
in 1 honors course this fall
semester.
If you are still deciding on a major and unsure
about what courses to take your first semester,
we suggest the following courses for your Fall
2008 semester:
1. TIDES class (1-1.5 credit(s))
One TIDES class is mandatory for all freshmen.
You must sign up for a TIDES class for the fall
semester. You can find
the list of TIDES classes at: http://classschedule.tulane.edu/.
(Look under Newcomb-Tulane College.) You can
find descriptions of TIDES courses at http://tides.tulane.edu/course_descriptions.cfm
There are lots of very interesting topics to
chose from. Students interested in the Business
School MUST take TIDB 101 or TIDB 102.
2. Language Class (4 credits)
Once you take the Language Placement questionnaire online you will be given
a placement. This is the language and level that you should register for.
Your foreign language proficiency requirement will be based on your school
and at
Tulane.
3. Math class or Science class (3-4 credits)
4. Possible or probable major course (3-4 credits)
5. An elective course from the School of Liberal Arts or Science and Engineering
(number of credits can vary)
For electives we suggest considering topics of interest you. Try something
that you have no knowledge of at all. You may be surprised and learn
that you are really interested in an area that you were not familiar
with before. Who knows, maybe you might want to major in that "new" area
of interest. This is the time to explore options.
The First Year Writing Course (ENGL 101) (4 credits)
needs to be completed during your freshman year. Only half of the first
year students can enroll in ENGL 101 in Fall 2008 , so do not worry
if you cannot enroll in ENGL 101 in the Fall 2008 as another set of
courses will be available in Spring 2009.
Please note that if you are declaring Engineering,
Architecture, Public Health or a specific major you will have a prescribed
set of courses and timeline that you will need to follow to graduate
and it is important that you consult with your summer academic advisor
to confirm your course selection. 7. Register On-Line at Appointed Date and Time
Register for courses using Tulane Online University
Records (TOUR) after you have planned a schedule and used the online
Schedule of Classes Planner to ensure the sections for which you
will register are open and there are no time conflicts.

the Registration page.

2008 Fall page.

section of ENGL 101 Freshman Writing

If there is a time conflict, TOUR will NOT add the
course and will report so in red.
•
If the section is full, TOUR will NOT add the course
and will report so in red (NOTE: some closed sections allow you to
add yourself to a wait list).
8. Click "EXIT" when you have completed adding courses to
your schedule.
9. After you have completed your registration for
Fall, you may want to make changes to your schedule and you will have
